About The Role
Key responsibilities for the role include:

Purpose Of Position
Under the general supervision of the Manager and Pathologist, the Pathologists' Assistant performs gross examination, description and sampling of surgical specimens. The Pathologists' Assistant performs hospital and medico-legal autopsies under the direction of the Pathologist.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Preparation, gross description, dissection of human tissue surgical specimens and preparing tissue for histological processing.
- Assure appropriate specimen accessioning.
- Obtain clinical history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory data etc.
- Photograph the body, organs, gross specimens, microscopic slides and other pertinent materials.
- Perform duties relating to administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports and data, including the filing of reports, protocols, photographic and microscopic slides; assuring the completion of specimen coding.
- Assure proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite and related gross rooms.
- Preparation of postmortem examinations.
- Ascertain proper legal authorization for autopsy and complying with Sault Area Hospital "Pronouncement of Death and Death Protocol" (D-6, Nursing Standards Manual).
- Retrieve the patient's medical chart and other pertinent data for review with the attending pathologist(s).
- Confer with the attending pathologist(s) to identify any special techniques and procedures to be utilized in the completion of the postmortem examination, (e.g. cultures, smears, histochemical, immunofluorescence, toxicological, viral, electron microscopy studies etc.), and notifying all personnel directly involved.
- Notify the physician in charge, the funeral home, and all other appropriate authorities prior to the beginning of the autopsy; and the coordinating of any requests for special specimen sampling (e.g. organ transplantation, research, etc.).
- Perform postmortem examinations, which may include: external examination; in situ organ inspection; evisceration; dissection and dictation or recording of data such as organ weights, presence of body fluids etc., and gross anatomic findings.
- Select, preparing and submitting appropriate gross tissue sections for frozen section analysis as well as for light microscopy or other ancillary testing.
- Obtain biological specimens such as blood, tissue and toxicological material for studies including flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry etc.; and performing special procedures such as enucleation, inner ear bone dissection, spinal cord removal etc.
- Gather and organize clinical information and data pertinent to the preparation of the preliminary summarization of the clinical history.
- Prepare the body for release (including indicating the presence of biohazards such as contagious disease, radiation implants, etc.), and releasing the body to the appropriate mortuary or funeral home representative.
- Assist in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Pathologists' Assistant Master's Program
- Certification (or eligible for and actively pursuing certification) with a Canadian or American certifying body for Pathologists' Assistant
- Recent work experience as a Pathologists' Assistant acceptable to the by Lab Administration

- Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and operation required.
- Knowledge of sterile tissue culture conditions as required by assigned area.

IAVI is seeking a Director, Clinical Lab Operations to lead IAVI's lab operations in Africa. The Director will lead logistical, technical, and regulatory aspects of lab services for clinical trials, while driving lab quality, budget management, vendor oversight, often leveraging technology and data analysis optimizing performance. Director will lead strategy to support the development of vaccines and antibodies for HIV, TB, and emerging infectious diseases. Overseeing the implementation of good clinical lab practices (gCLP) across partner clinical research centers (CRCs) ensuring sustained and robust lab quality systems and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Assurance:
- Development, implementation and monitoring of quality systems for both the internal IAVI Laboratory Operations unit as well as those of site labs selected, including:
- Ensuring readiness for technical audits
- Ensure laboratory operations meet regulatory standards and sponsor requirements
- Oversee preparation of sites for clinical trials and epidemiology studies.
- Oversee teams monitoring study progress at site laboratories for the duration of the study/trial.
Budget & Vendor Management:
- Development and management of operational budgets with budget managers and clinical teams based on study needs.

IAVI accelerates scientific discovery and development by fostering unique collaborations among academia, industry, local communities, governments, and funders to explore new and better ways to address public health threats that disproportionately affect people living in poverty. Our global reach, including a clinical research network in five countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in India, has allowed us to make fundamental contributions to understanding the epidemiology, transmission, virology, and immunology of HIV. This work played a key role in facilitating the design of promising HIV vaccine candidates, as well as the discovery of broadly neutralizing antibodies that are now being advanced as promising approaches for HIV prevention. Our integrated capabilities in vaccine and antibody discovery, development, and clinical research take advantage of bio-pharmaceutical industry expertise to accelerate the development and testing of prevention methods for HIV and other diseases.

Compensation And Benefits Information:
Salary is paid in local currency, and is commensurate and competitive with the local labor market. Please note, there may be some variation based on experience level.
