Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Design, specify, and apply protective relays and schemes for transmission and distribution systems, substations, generators, and motors.
- Perform detailed fault studies, including short-circuit analysis and transient stability simulations.
- Develop and maintain relay settings files, coordination studies, and protection philosophies.
- Review and approve protection designs prepared by others.
- Oversee the commissioning and testing of new protection systems and upgrades.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex protection system issues and NERC/CIP compliance challenges.
- Develop standards, procedures, and guidelines for power system protection.
- Collaborate with SCADA engineers to ensure proper integration of protection systems with control and monitoring platforms.
- Stay current with advancements in protection technology, including digital relays, communications, and cybersecurity for protection systems.
- Provide technical expertise and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in power system protection engineering.
- Demonstrated experience with various types of protective relays (e.g., SEL, GE, Siemens) and their application.
- Proficiency in power system analysis software such as ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD.
- Strong understanding of power system stability, fault analysis, and relay coordination principles.
- Experience with substation design and construction practices is a plus.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote team setting.
- Ability to work remotely from **Malindi, Kilifi, KE** or any other approved location in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities:

- Perform fault analysis and transient stability studies to assess system performance under various fault conditions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex protection system issues in existing infrastructure.
- Review and approve protection designs prepared by junior engineers and external consultants.
- Develop and maintain protection system standards, guidelines, and documentation.
- Stay current with advancements in protection technology, including digital relays, communication protocols (e.g., IEC 61850), and cybersecurity for protection systems.
- Collaborate with grid operators, asset owners, and project teams to ensure seamless integration of new assets and protection upgrades.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior protection engineers.
- Participate actively in remote team meetings, design reviews, and technical forums to drive innovation and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in power system protection engineering.
- Proven experience with the design, testing, and commissioning of protection systems for transmission and distribution networks.
- In-depth knowledge of protective relaying principles, types of relays, and their applications.
- Proficiency in power system analysis software for protection and fault studies.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC) and codes.
- Experience with SCADA systems and communication networks relevant to protection is a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of presenting technical information clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote, fast-paced environment.
