DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS**
An Occupational Therapist is a licensed professional responsible for evaluating, planning and carrying out occupational therapy work with handicapped children (emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, mentally retarded, physically handicapped and other health impaired)) while attending the Buffalo Public Schools. An incumbent plans and conducts treatment procedures using appropriate therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative activities. They observe and record patient's reactions to occupational therapy to exchange information with classroom teachers, evaluates the effectiveness of the program and adapts occupational therapy treatments according to the needs of the school children. They provide direction, assistance, consultation and instruction on all aspects of the occupational therapy program. Incumbents are required to have personal contacts with specialists of other disciplines in coordinating treatment plans, interpreting treatments and occupational therapy objectives and in providing precise factual and evaluative written and oral reports on the progress of patients in therapy. A licensed Occupational Therapist works with considerable independence in planning and carrying out a treatment program and in evaluating the progress of school children in the program within the scope of acceptable professional occupational therapy practices.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Occupational Therapists relate on a day-to-day basis with individual children in carrying out prescribed occupational therapy as follows:

  • Administers test batteries, such as the Ayres Sensory Integrative Battery for identifying deficits in cognitive ability of children;
  • Administers Sensory Integrative services directed toward dysfunction syndromes of disorder in postural and bilateral integration, developmental apraxia, tactile defensiveness, visual form and space, unilateral disregard and functions of right cerebral hemisphere and auditory - language disorders
  • Consults and works with classroom teachers to assist in programming within the regular class
  • Teaches children the skills and techniques required for participation in occupational therapy activities for the purpose of restoring, improving or maintaining function
  • May direct the activities of paraprofessional staff, trainees, students and volunteers participating in the occupational therapy program
  • May conduct or participate in training programs for trainees, students and others
  • Attends periodic meetings to report on patients' reactions and progress in the occupational therapy program
  • Maintains records and prepares official reports
  • Participates in conferences, institutes and workshops for the purpose of upgrading their occupational therapy skills
  • Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS**
Typists perform routine clerical work which involves the operation of equipment requiring the manipulation of a standard alphanumeric keyboard in accordance with standards of acceptable levels of production. The types of equipment used to produce correspondence, reports, charts, etc. include typewriters (Spanish and English) and Electronic Word Processing Equipment, CRT Terminals, Personal Computers, Data Terminals and Printers. This position is also characterized by a broad responsibility for the performance of non-typing clerical tasks. Work is routine in nature, however, as incumbents gain experience on assignments and unit activities, additional and more complex duties are added. These additional duties do not reach the difficulty or complexity of work associated with the senior level of this series. Although detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments with procedures that are definitely fixed, incumbents must exercise independent judgment in applying them to specific cases. Work is reviewed either by observation, periodic or spot checks, cross checking by others or by checking the completed work. The position differs from Typist in that the incumbent operates both Spanish and English typewriters, translates both the Spanish and English languages and must speak the Spanish language fluently. (This class is equivalent to that of Clerk with the exception that incumbents must have the ability to type at a reasonable rate of speed.) No supervision is exercised over other employees.

The Psychologist will work with general and special education students in classrooms and individually to provide both academic and behavioral Response to Intervention (RTI). They will work with teachers and staff to develop appropriate Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans and to implement any district academic and behavioral initiatives. The Psychologist will also perform any assigned duties deemed necessary and appropriate.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Incumbents of a position in this class perform detailed and difficult clerical work in a placement and registration office. They are responsible for the performance of varied clerical tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment, a complete understanding of the rules, policies, and procedures of the office, and the operation of a typewriter, CRT terminal, personal computer, word processor, printer, scanner and other related office equipment. Incumbents receive infrequent instruction in the performance of their work; however, new problems are referred to a superior before action is taken. Employees in this class work under general supervision of the Director, Supervisor, and Assistant Director of Student Placement and Registration.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Works directly with Spanish-speaking individuals;
  • Reproduces and types (Spanish and English languages), from various sources including letters, bulletins, flyers, forms, and memoranda pertaining to the Central Registration Center.
  • Receives callers and visitors, answers inquiries, and refers them to the proper Central Registration staff responsible for those areas.
  • Answers telephone providing detailed information to callers.
  • Opens, dates, sorts, distributes, and files documents and mail.
  • Registers and identifies placement of new and transfer students into the Buffalo Public Schools with a thorough knowledge of all requirements:

  • Prepares all incoming applications verifying data in the Student Information System, Special Education databases, Google Maps, and other information sources as instructed.

  • Enters all placement applications into the required system with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Reviews all documents required for school entrance including but not limited to; academic, discipline, custody, birth, immunization and residency documents.
  • Reviews all paperwork and appropriately directs potential Special Education and English Language Learner students to the appropriate offices.
  • Ability to identify potential McKinney Vento eligible students and Migrant Worker families based on documents completed by the parent and reviewed.
  • Extensive conversations are conducted with parents and guardians to determine appropriate student placement. If necessary, individual cases are referred to the Director, Supervisor, or Assistant Director of Student Placement and Registration.
  • Scans, enters and verifies all data entered into the student information system and all databases part of the registration and placement process.
  • Compiles, prepares, files and maintains records, reports, and other documents as requested;

Applicants must have continuous and permanent status in any city department for one year as an Account Clerk-Typist, Account Clerk-Stenographer, Administrative Aide, Legal Secretary, Legal Stenographer, School Clerk, Report Technician, Senior Account Clerk-Typist, Senior Account Clerk-Stenographer, Senior Stenographer, Senior Typist, Stenographer, Typist or Typist

(Spanish, Karen, Nepali, Somali, French or Burmese Speaking).

In addition, all applicants must have completed a course in typing or keyboarding, which must be listed on the application.
NOTE:
Applicants must pass the written examination and qualifying typing test at 35 wpm and translate a passage from English to Spanish
Applicants that have previously qualified on a qualifying typing/keyboarding test at 35 wpm administered by the City of Buffalo Civil Service, for examination purposes, will not be required to participate in another typing/keyboarding test.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Typists perform routine clerical work, which involves the operation of equipment requiring the manipulation of a standard alphanumeric keyboard in accordance with standards of acceptable levels of production. The types of equipment used to produce correspondence, reports, charts, etc. include Electronic Word Processing Equipment, Personal Computers, Data Terminals, Printers, etc. This position is also characterized by a broad responsibility for the performance of non-typing clerical tasks. Work is routine in nature, however, as incumbents gain experience on assignments and unit activities, additional and more complex duties are added. These additional duties do not reach the difficulty or complexity of work associated with the senior level of this series. Although detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments with procedures that are definitely fixed, incumbents must exercise independent judgment in applying them to specific cases. Work is reviewed either by observation, periodic or spot checks, cross-checking by others or by checking the completed work. (This class is equivalent to that of Clerk with the exception that incumbents must have the ability to type at a reasonable rate of speed.) No supervision is exercised over other employees.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Types correspondence, reports, documents, records and other materials from various sources under varying degrees of direction using equipment with the alphanumeric keyboard

  • sets up, makes adjustments and operates a variety of equipment in order to produce a typed copy from a variety of sources

  • proofreads typed copy and makes corrections
  • composes and types routine correspondence and memoranda from verbal and/or written instructions

  • Performs a variety of non-typing clerical tasks as assigned

  • Files and maintains records, reports and other documents:

  • checks for clerical accuracy and completeness

  • opens, dates, sorts, distributes and files mail
  • sorts, indexes and files bills, requisitions, ledger cards and other material alphabetically and/or numerically
  • posts and makes entries from original sources and maintains records, bills, control cards and ledgers
  • makes file searches and pulls needed material.

  • Issues and records licenses, permits and applications

  • Collects fees and accounts for monies received
  • Maintains time reports and payroll data
  • Assists in compiling data, statistics and other basic information for research purposes
  • Answers telephone or switchboard: takes messages and gives routine information
  • May act as receptionist, directing callers to proper persons or sources of information
  • Inputs and retrieves data using a computer terminal
  • May operate copy machines, microfilm, simple computing and other office machines
  • Performs related duties as required.
