Job Opportunity: Head of Compliance – Avenews
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Reports to: Managing Director
About the Role
Avenews, a CBK Licensed Digital Credit Provider (DCP), is seeking a highly qualified
Head of Compliance
to lead our enterprise-wide compliance and risk governance agenda. This is a senior leadership role, responsible for regulatory engagement, internal controls, anti-money laundering (AML/CFT), data protection, and embedding a risk-conscious culture across the organization.
The ideal candidate will ensure full adherence to CBK DCP Regulations, FRC AML Guidelines, Data Protection Act, and other applicable legal frameworks, while also strengthening the company's Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for regulatory compliance, AML/CFT, data privacy, conduct risk, and internal controls.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of statutory returns to CBK, FRC, CRBs, and other regulators.
- Lead implementation of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF) and maintain an up-to-date institutional risk register.
- Oversee internal compliance audits, testing, policy enforcement, and staff training on regulatory obligations.
- Act as Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and ensure full compliance with POCAMLA and FRC guidelines.
- Manage conduct risk, complaints handling, and resolution of regulatory breaches.
- Build a culture of risk awareness and ethical conduct across the institution.
Candidate Qualifications
Education & Professional Background
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Risk Management, Finance, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Professional certifications such as CAMS, CFE, CISA, CIPP, or equivalent are an added advantage.
- Minimum 8 years' experience in compliance or risk management, with 3+ years in a leadership role within financial services, banking, or fintech.
Technical & Regulatory Expertise
- Strong grasp of CBK DCP regulations, FRC AML/CFT requirements, Data Protection Act, and CRB reporting obligations.
- Proven ability to operationalize compliance frameworks, risk registers, and training programs.
- Experience with regulatory inspections, audit readiness, and risk culture transformation.
Leadership & Soft Skills
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong attention to detail, ethical judgment, and analytical capability.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and maintain high standards of regulatory integrity.

About the Role
Avenews, a CBK Licensed DCP, is seeking a highly experienced Head of Credit to provide strategic and operational leadership of our credit function. This is a senior role with full accountability for the credit lifecycle—from origination and approval to portfolio monitoring, collections, and recovery.
The ideal candidate will balance portfolio growth with credit quality, ensuring alignment with CBK Prudential Guidelines and regulatory requirements, while building a credit culture that is both commercially driven and risk-disciplined.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead execution of credit strategy in line with growth objectives and risk appetite.
• Develop and enforce credit policies, procedures, frameworks, and controls.
• Oversee credit origination and underwriting, ensuring sound risk assessments.
• Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging risks, and recommend corrective actions.
• Direct collections and recovery strategies, including third-party agency oversight.
• Ensure full compliance with CBK Prudential Guidelines, provisioning, and CRB reporting.
• Lead, mentor, and develop credit teams to maintain excellence in performance and governance.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align credit operations with business strategy.
Candidate Qualifications
Education & Professional Background
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
• Professional certification, such as FRM/CFA or Credit Management Certification, is an added advantage.
• Minimum 10 years' experience in credit risk management, especially for SMEs, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within banking, microfinance, or fintech. Experience with trade finance facilities would be an added advantage.
Technical & Regulatory Expertise
• Deep understanding of CBK Prudential Guidelines, POCAMLA, Data Protection Act, and CRB regulations.
• Strong expertise in credit analysis, portfolio risk monitoring, collections, and recoveries.
• Proven track record in developing and executing credit policies, frameworks, and strategies.
Leadership & Soft Skills
• Strong leadership, team management, and mentorship abilities.
• Excellent stakeholder management, including board reporting and regulator engagement.
• Data-driven thinker with the ability to balance commercial growth and credit discipline.
• High integrity, sound judgment, and strong decision-making skills.
