Call for Application: Consultancy Services for Visual Design and Illustration for Livelihood Training Module

Background

BRAC International is a leading nonprofit organization with a mission to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease, and social injustice. Our approach is to identify innovative and holistic solutions toward sustainable livelihoods and socioeconomic resilience. We achieve large-scale, transformative change by empowering individuals, especially women, and their families and communities to overcome poverty and become self-reliant and resilient. We work with local communities to innovate demand-driven programmes that integrate social development with market-based solutions like microfinance and social entrepreneurship.

The Mastercard Foundation Accelerating Impact for Young Women in Partnership with BRAC (AIM) is equipping 1.2 million adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) with age-appropriate entrepreneurship, employability, and life-skills training, as well as the tools to start and scale their own businesses. This five-year programme applies BRAC's proven model using microfinance, youth empowerment, agriculture, and skills development to improve lives and livelihoods. It operates in five African countries: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, with implementation set to begin in Ghana and Kenya in the coming years.

Objective of the Assignment, Scope of Work, and Deliverables

A core objective of the AIM Programme is to deliver livelihood training to participants in the last mile using visual flipcharts and illustrated materials that communicate information in a simple, engaging, and easy-to-understand way. The purpose of this assignment is to make training more interactive and accessible, particularly for participants with low literacy levels, through the use of professional, context-specific visuals. The consultant will therefore be responsible for designing and illustrating high-quality training materials—such as flipcharts, posters, or other agreed formats—across key thematic areas including goat rearing, pig rearing, chicken production, basic and climate-smart agriculture (covering crop production technologies for rice, maize, cassava, beans, groundnut, and sweet potato), vegetable production and homestead gardening, and small business management.

These materials are expected to simplify technical content into clear, easy-to-understand visuals that are gender-sensitive, youth-friendly, and culturally appropriate. They should be adaptable across multiple African countries, particularly Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, to ensure relevance and accurate representation. The overall goal is to strengthen participants' learning, retention, and practical application of livelihood skills through visually engaging and contextually grounded training resources.

To achieve this, the consultant will review existing livelihood training modules and storyboards provided by BRAC and develop visual concepts, illustrations, and layouts for each thematic area. The visuals may include posters, full-page artwork, ADDIE models, icons, and other design elements aligned with the creative brief shared by BRAC. All materials must accurately convey key technical information in a clear and simplified manner suitable for low-literacy audiences, while also reflecting the realities of rural African livelihoods and adhering to BRAC's brand guidelines. The consultant will also ensure that the designs are gender-sensitive, youth-friendly, and supportive of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) empowerment.

Additionally, the consultant will adapt and tailor the illustrations to reflect the unique contexts of the target countries, incorporating elements such as local facial features, clothing, languages, farming practices, and environmental settings to ensure cultural appropriateness and relatability. Where necessary, illustrations will include captions and trainer notes to guide facilitators. The consultant will share draft versions of the materials with BRAC for review, incorporate feedback, and finalize the designs accordingly.

The final deliverables will include refined and illustrated storyboards, completed in consultation with BRAC; finalized training illustrations in high-resolution, print-ready PDF formats (A3/A2 sizes); and editable source files in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or a similar format.

The training visuals will be used to support livelihoods training under the AIM programme. They are intended for adolescent girls and young women (ages 15–35) in the five implementing countries, coming from extremely vulnerable households and with low literacy levels.
