TBM Fitters
As the TBM Fitter, you will be required to:
- Carry out preventative maintenance on tunnelling plant equipment
- Carry out maintenance and reactive repairs
- Ensure health and safety procedures are followed
Experience / qualifications needed:
- Experience working as a mechanical engineer on tunnelling projects
- Strong knowledge of tunnelling machines and plant equipment
- A strong health and safety awareness
- TEEPS or TSTS qualification would be highly beneficial
TBM Electricians
As the TBM electrician you will perform maintenance and installation works for the TBM & Tunnelling equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Carry out preventative maintenance on plant and equipment
- Carry out reactive repairs and maintenance as required
- Installation of tunnelling & plant equipment
Experience needed:
- Experience working on TBM projects
- Strong health and safety awareness
Qualifications/Training
- JIB Gold Card
- Safety Critical Medical (desired)
- Tunnelling training would be highly beneficial
- ECS card
TBM Welders
As a skilled TBM Welder, you will be responsible for cutting and joining metals and other materials. You will operate appropriate equipment to put together mechanical structures or parts with a great deal of precision. Your job is important as it provides the foundation for strong infrastructure.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures
- Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
- Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match measurements)
- Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
- Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces
- Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead)
- Repair TBM machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps
- Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws
- Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety
Experience needed:
- Proven experience as welder
- Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (TIG, MMA etc.)
- Experience in using electrical or manual tools (saws, squares, calipers etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings
Knowledge / Qualifications :
- Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face-shield, gloves etc.)
- Deftness and attention to detail
- Proficient in English
- Successful completion of a relevant apprenticeship program is required
- Professional Certification (e.g. an AWS welding certificate) will be a plus

We are expanding our team and looking for a skilled International Engineering Manager to oversee our tunnelling projects across the Middle East and the UK.
The Role:
As an International Engineering Manager, you will oversee our segment tunnelling and SCL (Sprayed Concrete Lining) works and lead on engineering aspects. You will play a crucial role in potentially integrating Drill and Blast techniques, enhancing our project capabilities. You will also assist with proposal development and submission. This role is pivotal in managing project delivery, ensuring safety and efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of quality. Projects include desalination, hydro-electricity, rail and road transport, utilities and some bespoke and iconic projects in Saudi Arabia.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and direct the engineering aspects of segment tunnelling and SCL operations.
- Oversee the integration of Drill and Blast methods with new and existing projects, depending on project requirements.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure project compliance with technical specifications, safety standards and cost efficient delivery.
- Lead project planning, resource allocation, and execution to meet or exceed project deliverables.
- Serve as the primary technical advisor for tunnelling and underground construction projects.
- Facilitate communication between project sites and headquarters, ensuring timely and accurate project updates.
- Travel between the Middle East, Europe and the UK as required.
- Aligning Health and Safety to country working in as well as UK standard to be always above the requirement to strive for excellence.
- Leading and supporting our behaviour safety programme LIFE.
- Micro tunnel and large scale TBM contracts will be running so previous experience required in this area.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in tunnelling, particularly in segment tunnelling and SCL works.
- Familiarity with Drill and Blast operations is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to work with and manage international teams of up to 39 different nationalities.
- Excellent problem-solving and project management skills.
- Relevant engineering degree or equivalent professional qualification.

Key Accountabilities
Ensure the site is run in a safe and efficient manner that reflects the high standards that Joseph Gallagher Ltd are renowned for.
Ensure the commercial performance of the contract is maximised
Produce procurement schedules and liaise with the procurement department to ensure sites have adequate resources to complete the tasks
Continually forecasting, keeping the team informed of forecasts and changes and managing the scope meticulously, so knowing the costs for unplanned construction work or resources and keeping that set-aside.
Reporting Risk and Opportunities to the senior management team.
Deliver the work to the specified quality without defects. Ensure production and implementation of Project Plans, RAMS, ITP's and waste management plans, in line with Company procedures
Ensure detailed site diaries/records are completed. Maintain commercial tension to drive out cost and challenge the status quo
Job Skills, Experience And Qualifications
Experience of managing Tunnelling and Shaft projects within high regulated environments in the UK. TBM is main tunnelling work so previous experience in this is required.
A broad civil background would be an advantage.
Proficient in NEC contracts. A contract and change management
Experienced in Design Management Programme & Risk Management, Production of CVR, incl cost control, forecasting and value assessment
Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering, or equivalent
SMSTS
Ability to challenge designs and resolve problems to conclusion
Ability to manage and deliver a successful project with minimal guidance.
Degree qualified as a minimum.

Position: Trainee Slurry TBM Operators

Reporting to: Microtunnelling Manager
About The Role
Joseph Gallagher Ltd (JGL) is offering an exciting opportunity for x2 Trainee Slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Operators to join our specialist tunnelling division. This role is ideally suited to a recent university graduate with a degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, who is eager to begin a career in the tunnelling and civil engineering industry.
The successful candidate will work alongside experienced tunnelling professionals, gaining hands-on training and experience in slurry TBM operation, tunnel support systems, and plant operations. The position will involve working on a range of major infrastructure and tunnelling projects across the UK, so flexibility and willingness to travel are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the operation and maintenance of slurry TBMs under the supervision of experienced operators.
- Support daily tunnelling and shift operations, including slurry management, pressure monitoring, and spoil transport systems.
- Assist with the set-up and alignment of the TBM jacking rig and rails, ensuring all components are correctly installed, levelled, and secured prior to launch.
- Perform pre-start inspections, daily checklists, and QA procedures in accordance with JGL's tunnelling standards and manufacturer guidelines.
- Carry out basic mechanical and electrical checks and report any issues to the TBM Engineer or Supervisor.
- Maintain accurate operational and safety records in line with site procedures.
- Undertake training and development to achieve competency as a qualified Slurry TBM Operator.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering (preferred).
- Strong technical aptitude and willingness to learn in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Flexibility to work and travel to various project locations across the UK.

Training and Development
- Comprehensive training will be provided by Joseph Gallagher Ltd, including both on-site practical instruction and classroom-based learning.

- Slurry circuit management and separation plant operations.
- QA documentation, pre-start and daily checklists.

- The aim is to progress the trainee to a fully competent Slurry TBM Operator, capable of leading operations on future JGL tunnelling projects.
